Before you load a machine at a launderette, find out whether detergent is already part of the service, available to buy on site, or something you need to bring yourself. The answer varies by operator and even by branch, so checking in advance saves a wasted trip or an avoidable mistake.
Identify the dosing arrangement
Launderette detergent arrangements generally fall into three situations, though they can overlap: detergent included automatically by the machine, detergent available to purchase on site, or detergent brought by the customer. Some branches may offer more than one of these at the same time. Read the operator's own instructions before assuming anything.
| Situation | What it means for you | Confirmed for |
|---|---|---|
| Detergent included automatically | No need to add anything; the machine doses it | Wash.ME branches (see operator instructions) |
| Dispenser on site | Buy detergent from a machine at the branch | My Washing, St James Street, King's Lynn (illustrative example) |
| Bring your own | Customer supplies detergent before starting | My Washing, St James Street, King's Lynn (illustrative example) |
| Confirm the arrangement with your own branch before visiting. Details may differ between sites of the same operator. | ||
Note that the dispenser-on-site and bring-your-own options are not mutually exclusive. At the St James Street branch of My Washing in King's Lynn, for instance, the operator states that customers are recommended to bring their own detergent, and there is also a coin-operated dispenser available on site. Both options can exist together.
Read machine instructions
Read the operator’s published machine instructions before using a self-service launderette. Read them fully before loading your laundry and before inserting any coins. Use those instructions to check whether detergent belongs in a hopper, in the drum, or is supplied automatically.
At branches where the machine supplies detergent automatically, the operator's instructions make this explicit. For Wash.ME launderettes, the published instructions state: Detergent is included, no need to add any! This applies to that operator's system; check whether the same applies at your branch.
The My Washing St James Street branch instructions direct customers to add detergent into hopper or drum, depending on the machine. Follow the instruction for the specific machine you are using, not a general assumption.
If you are unsure whether your branch automatically doses detergent, find a launderette and check its source details or contact the branch directly before you travel.
Check included products and options
When detergent is included in the machine, the operator may also offer optional add-ons that you select on screen before paying. These options differ by operator and by branch, so they are not universal.
At Wash.ME launderettes, the published instructions describe optional extras such as a pre-wash, fabric softener, and a disinfectant fabric softener option, selectable on the touch screen. This information applies specifically to Wash.ME's documented system and may not reflect what is available at other operators or at every Wash.ME location. Always read the screen prompts for your machine on the day.
Where a branch sells detergent via an on-site dispenser, check the product type available before committing to it. If you have a fabric restriction (see below), you may need to bring a suitable product rather than rely on what is stocked locally.
Bring only a suitable product when required
If your branch requires you to bring your own detergent, use the following checklist to prepare. Use these checks when your operator permits or requests you to bring detergent.
- Check the care label on each garment before leaving home. You can check the care-label meaning if any symbol is unfamiliar.
- Match the detergent type to the fabrics you are washing. A product labelled for delicates is different from a standard biological detergent.
- Check the product label for whether it is suitable for machine washing and for the temperature you plan to use. Follow the product's own instructions, not assumptions.
- Bring the correct quantity. Follow the dosing instructions on the product packaging. Do not guess: bring enough for the number of loads you plan to wash.
- If the branch also has an on-site dispenser, note what product it dispenses before deciding whether to rely on it.

Special fabric restrictions
At an automatic-dosing launderette, the machine controls what product is used. If you have garments that require a specialist detergent — for example, one formulated for silk or wool — check with the branch or operator before loading them, as you may not be able to substitute your own product at that type of machine.
Specialist products such as Persil Silk & Wool Washing Liquid are formulated specifically for delicate fabrics and are described by the manufacturer as suitable for hand and machine washing of silks and wool. Always follow the current product label for dosing and programme guidance, as instructions can change between product versions.
If you are unsure whether your garment can be machine-washed at all, check the care label first and refer to our washing symbols guide for help reading it. When in doubt, contact the garment manufacturer rather than borrowing instructions from a similar-looking item.
What to do when instructions are unclear
If the machine instructions at your branch do not make the dosing arrangement clear, or if you have a specific question about product compatibility, ask before starting a cycle. The following questions can help you get the right answer from the right source.
- Does this machine supply detergent automatically, or do I need to add my own? Ask the branch or check the posted instructions for that specific machine.
- Is there a dispenser on site, and what product does it dispense? This matters if you have fabric restrictions or allergies.
- Can I add my own specialist detergent even if the machine includes one? Do not assume; confirm with the operator for that branch.
- Is my garment suitable for the wash programmes available here? If unsure, check the care label and contact the garment manufacturer.
- Where can I get help if a machine is not behaving as expected? Use the operator’s published contact details. The My Washing St James Street page, for example, publishes a contact number for urgent queries.
For questions specific to an operator's service, use their published help resources. Wash.ME, for example, provides an online help page for questions about how their launderettes work. For finding a branch and reviewing its published details, find a launderette and check its source details in the Laundry Visit directory.
